Sewing the cape V9288 (Vogue): flip-flap the GyroCape!
Aaah! The Cape ! A wardrobe piece that I looove since I was a kid … it was a bit obvious that I was going to sew one, one day.
It’s done since February with the Vogue Patterns’ VXXXX cape… it just took a bit of time to shoot the pictures (Thanks Morgane!).
My little extra love is that I go to work in a mini-Segway as soon as the weather allows. With a cloak on my shoulders, floating in the wind, I transform in a cape and wheeled super-heroine! I just love it !

The V9288 cape pattern
I won this pattern thanks to The Foldline who elected my Charlie Caftan “Star Make” in October. Nice gift that I allowed me to choose 2 patterns!
Vogue patterns include instructions in French, English and Spanish. You can go with your eyes closed on that side. The boards are printed on an extremely fine paper and quite fragile but very legible.
The cape VXXXX pattern is a Vogue Easy, so super easy to achieve … normally, when we do not complicate your sewing life like me -> but I tell you about that below.
The cape is formed of a back and 2 front sides on which the front piece is buttoned up. And then, you add the sash belt.
Sewing the V9288 cape
Not very complicated, the pattern is divided into 9 pieces:
– the back to the fold
– the front sides
– the facing of the sides in front
– the front
– the front facings
– the button plackets
– the front collar
– the side & back collar
– the belt
And then, I decided to add a lining but I don’t really know how to properly draft that …
In addition, I’m not used to handlingàd sewing lining fabric. Especially this one, thin, slippery and very “lively”. It ended with a lot of hacks and hand sewing.
Therefore, the cloak had its moment of disgrace during which I switched on less painful sewing projects …!
The wool fabrics were however a pleasure to work. With wool fabric, it seems that nothing can’t be fixed by a bit of steam.
Finally everything can be fixed… Except the buttonholes that I had to bring to a pro. Despite my best efforts, my Janome S5 stubbornly refused to sew them on.
The collar is to be interfaced to give it enough body. I chose to do the inside of the collar in a matching Milano jersey to make sure it would not scratch my ridiculously sensitive skin.
Finally, admire, please, these beautiful vintage glass faceted buttons. Bought for a pittance in Recycling sewing shop.
Conclusion on the V9288 cape
I wear my cape V9288 with pleasure and comfort. I love to drape it over my shoulders with a big swissssshhhh of fabric.
But I must admit that this is not the most practical clothing on the Earth, especially with my backpack (my purse is a crossbody backpack). The button closure is not very practical as you HAVE to button the 5 five to secure it…
Also I’m not totally satisfied by my finishes with the lining … maybe one day I’ll improve that.
However, it does its little effect when I ride on my Segway. I was even filmed by the passenger of a car who was following me the other day … #imagecopyright
